The New Faces of Match.com: Reggie and Cecily

21 Days

Reggie and Cecily, a young, happy couple, met on Match.com a few weeks ago, and immediately sparked a connection. They had been chatting back and forth, sending flirty texts, e-mails, and even the occasional phone call. They decide they need to meet face-to-face, and set the date for April 14, 2011. Here is an account of their first interaction:

Cecily: Reggie...is that you?
Reggie: "'You're late'" (Currie, Jr. 119).
Cecily: Oh, darling, I'm so sorry! I've been here for over twenty minutes, I just wasn't sure what you looked like, so I had a difficult time finding you.
Reggie: I guess I forgot to mention that I was in a wheel chair, huh?
Cecily: Yes. Also the fact that you do not have legs, and only about half of an arm.
[Cecily and Reggie get past the initial awkwardness, and eventually start to have a lovely time together]
Reggie: Cecily, I've been thinking, about us. I have never met anyone like you, and there is nothing in the world that would make me happier than you becoming Mrs. Fox. And I know you might think that we haven't known each other long, but my motto is; engaged today, engaged tomorrow, "'makes no difference to The Fox'" (Currie, Jr. 117).
Cecily: Oh, dearest Reggie, I would never think this is too soon for an engagement. In fact, silly boy, "we have been engaged for the last three months" (Wilde 32).
Reggie: Wha-? The last three months? We've only been talking for a few weeks.
Cecily: Well, I've actually been viewing your profile for almost six months now, and even though we didn't talk at all, just your profile, the beautiful picture, and inane facts, well, "I daresay it was foolish of me, but I fell in love with you" (Wilde 32).
Reggie: That's...beautiful. Is there anything else I should know about? Have you adopted children for us to raise together?
Cecily: No, do not be ridiculous my love. However, I have already started planning the wedding! It's going to be amazing, I'm gonna get real weird with it.
Reggie: Really, the crazy hasn't been turned on yet? [To himself] That's awesome. [To the bartender] "'Pour me a shot'a that Turkey,'" actually, make it two (Currie, Jr. 108).
Cecily: Celebratory shots! How delightful! I'll have two, too!
[Reggie looks a bit perplexed]
Cecily: I have all of the wedding plans organized in multiple binders back at my house, my good friends Lady Bracknell and Gwendolyn have been helping with every detail! Would you like to come over and look through everything? I'm sure we have cucumber sandwiches, cake, bread and butter, and muffi-
Reggie: Hold that thought! Is that my phone ringing?
[Reggie picks up his phone, which clearly was not ringing, mumbles something into it, and then hangs up]
Reggie: Oh! Wow... I'm so sorry to do this to you, but I just remembered, my brother, Bunbury, is very very sick. I'm supposed to go over to his house tonight to take care of him!
Cecily: Oh, my love, that is so very thoughtful of you! Taking care of your brother like that. I am so lucky
Reggie: Yes. I am a very generous person, always putting others before myself. Why don't you go home, I should be there in no time!
Cecily: "Considering...that I only met you to-day for the first time, I think it is rather hard that you should leave me for so long a period," please go as quickly as you can, so soon you will be back with me? (Wilde 34)
Reggie: Of course, sweet Cecily, I will be back in no time.
[Reggie wheels himself off, never to return again, Cecily still looks giddy and cheerful]
